English Coach Update Minutes, April 2010
Nova Scotia English Coaching Committee
Minutes of Business Meeting
April 11th, 2010
HBJL
The meeting was called to order at 10AM by the Chair, Mary-Clare McLaren with 21 in attendance. The minutes from 2009 were covered by the circulated November 2009 Report to the NSEF AGM. In addition the NSEF Guidelines for the English Provincial Coaching Committee were circulated.
Moved by Dawn Helm, Seconded by Roz Moskovits that they be accepted as distributed.
Election of PCC – Mary-Clare McLaren nominated by Laura Chaisson, seconded by Roz Moskovitz. No further nominations. Elected.
Appointment of MCC – Jill Barker re-appointed as per the terms of National Coaching Policy and Procedures.
New Business:
1. Motion by Jill Barker – Updating hours are to be passed in yearly by November 1st to the NSEF office. Seconded by Nancy Evans. Carried. It was noted that sometimes a master list will be passed in for clinics and this was acceptable at office but it is the responsibility of the coach individual to ensure which format is used and they are reminded to keep good records of their updating. Dawn Helm requested her attendance for the symposium be sent to the NBEA as she can use for updating in that province.
2. Inaugural presentation of the Gold/Silver/Bronze Update Certificates to those present. Those recipients will be recognized by the NSEF once all are completed from the database. Certificates will also recognize the fact that the coach is current. NSEF Office did a great job on the design of our certificates!
3. Amateur Rule for 2010 now in effect as a pilot project for EC National Rules for Hunter Jumper. IOB’s are cautioned that they must ensure they meet all other requirements to compete as an amateur rider and it is extremely important that they are not coaching students at any EC sanctioned competition as that would revoke amateur rider status (and jeopardize the pilot rule).
4. Review of the Symposium: Attendees enthusiastic about our first joint English/Western symposium. It was expressed that having two qualified clinicians to demonstrate coach topics was a very useful training tool and hoped there would be more of same in the future. The benefit was that it is in an actual venue with students and horses, not classroom video. It was felt that this type of training will raise the coaching standard. A couple of notable comments include: “IOBs need do to their job – so I can do mine” – Elaine Partington, NCCP Coach. “Coach training is to help coaches learn to deliver information but knowledge is up to candidate” – Kevin Crosby, NCCP Coach.
5. Suggestions for other training included fitness, competition training.
6. Discussion on the “rollover” into the new NCCP – those present reminded that they should check that they are in the new NCCP database and that their information is correct. Several of those present who are Coach 1 or 2 note that they are “training” in the database for the new level. Once the Competition Coach and Coach Specialist receive context approval, EC and CAC will look at the procedure for the “rollover”, hopefully late 2010.
Formal meeting adjourned. The attendees then returned to the symposium schedule.
Respectfully Submitted,
Mary-Clare McLaren
