Coaches from all sports and regions in Atlantic Canada share a vital responsibility: guiding young athletes toward self-activated excellence in high-performance environments. In this keynote, Dr. Steve Gennaro—an expert in youth culture, the UNCRC, and the SDGs—will introduce a transformative, rights-based model for player development. By integrating key principles from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Sustainable Development Goals, coaches can foster environments where athletes’ voices are valued, their well-being is prioritized, and their personal agency is nurtured. The session will provide practical strategies and communication approaches that empower athletes to become self-driven learners, embrace their full potential, and collectively elevate the future of sport in Atlantic Canada.
About the speaker:
Dr. Steve Gennaro is a globally recognized leader in Child and Youth Studies whose interdisciplinary work bridges theory, practice, and policy in youth development. Over more than two decades, he has pioneered innovative approaches to understanding how social, psychological, and digital dimensions shape young people's lives. As a founding faculty member of York University’s groundbreaking Children, Childhood, and Youth Studies Program—the first of its kind in Canada—his leadership helped establish a hub of international influence and excellence in children’s rights research and education.
A celebrated scholar and the author of 4 books, Dr. Gennaro's work continues to inform both academic discourse and hands-on approaches for advocating with and for young people. For example, his research has shaped coach education programs for Canada Soccer by integrating the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), aligning athlete development with a rights-based ethos that prioritizes well-being, agency, and empowerment.
Recognized for his contributions to advancing children’s rights, Dr. Gennaro has been appointed to Canada’s Child Rights Academic Network by Senator Landon Pearson and to the European Academy of Sciences Ukraine. Currently a Visiting Researcher at the University of Bologna, he continues to spearhead global collaborations on best practices in sport, play, and youth development. Through his visionary work, Dr. Gennaro remains at the forefront of guiding coaches, educators, and organizations toward innovative models of athlete-centered, rights-based, and globally engaged coaching practice.
